Democratic senators Ron Wyden, Elizabeth Warren and Sheldon Whitehouse sent a formal letter dated September 16, 2026 to the secretary of the Treasure, Scott Bessentand to the Secretary of State, Marco Rubioasking for information on the management of funds from Venezuelan natural resources in the custody of the US government.
The request arises following reports that indicate that at least US$13,000 million generated by sales of oil Venezuelan have been deposited in an account under the supervision of the Treasury Department. Lawmakers refer to Executive Order 14373 issued in January 2026 by the president donald trumpthrough which the fund deposit account for foreign governments was established.
According to the letter, said rule assigned the Treasury Department the responsibility of managing the inflows and outflows of these capitals as custodians on behalf of the government of Venezuela. The senators point out that supervision also covers income obtained from other minerals, such as gold, after the issuance of general licenses that require payments to be transferred to this same account.
In the document, the parliamentarians express their concern about the absence of explanations about the destination of the resources and the lack of safeguards implemented to avoid irregularities in the use of money. Likewise, they maintain that the funds would have initially been kept in a bank in Qatar before their final transfer to the coffers of the Treasury Department.
The members of the Senate They demand clarification of the status current of the account and the control mechanisms applied by the corresponding authorities. The requirement seeks to specify the administrative procedures carried out with these assets without the direct intermediation of the Congress.
