Colombia is approaching the 2026 elections in a context marked by the greater vulnerability of political leaders and an increase in violent acts against representatives of different sectors. The panorama is complicated due to the strengthening of illegal armed groups and the resurgence of the armed conflict.
To respond to this situation, the government of Gustavo Petro, through the National Protection Unit (UNP) and other entities, adopted additional measures with the aim of safeguarding the candidates and strengthening electoral security. These actions seek to counteract the escalation of violence registered in various regions of the country.
According to The Spectatorthe UNP allocated more than 30,000 million pesos to facilitate the use of armored vehicles to protect candidates and public figures, while concern persists about the effectiveness of these strategies a few months before the votes.
Between January 1 and November 8, 2025, the Electoral Observation Mission (MOE) recorded 369 violent events directed at political, social and communal leaders. Among these incidents is the murder of Miguel Uribe Turbay, who was a presidential candidate.
One of the recent episodes recognized by The Spectator was the attack against Senator Temístocles Ortega, a member of Cambio Radical, which occurred on November 14. Before the media, Ortega declared: “I have personally asked to reinforce the scheme, but they have not done so.”
An armed attack against Renson Martínez, governor of Arauca, was also reported in an event attributed to the National Liberation Army (ELN). while traveling on the road between Fortul and Saravena.
The electoral atmosphere became even more tense with the video appearance of “Iván Mordisco”, leader of the FARC dissident called the Central General Staff (EMC), who announced the risk of an expansion of the conflict in the period prior to the elections.
