A maritime drone, of unknown origin, explodes in the Romanian port of Constanta

Bucharest, June 5 (EFE).- A maritime drone, of currently unknown origin, exploded this Friday morning in the Romanian port of Constanza, on the Black Sea, without causing damage or injuries, reported the Romanian Ministry of Defense.

In a statement, the Ministry explained that the device belongs to the type of drones used in the Ukrainian war, without specifying whether it was Russian or Ukrainian.

According to local press reports, the drone had a timer and measured about seven meters in length.

The incident took place at 10:30 local time (08:30 GMT) near the headquarters of the Romanian Agency for Saving Human Lives at Sea, and caused no casualties.

The alert had been activated this morning, so the authorities had time to evacuate the area where the drone was found.

According to the Defense statement, “the target was in the process of evaluation and securing” when the explosion occurred.

The Romanian authorities do not rule out the possibility that there are other maritime drones in the area and issued alert messages to evacuate areas of the coast of Constanta and Tulcea (northeast of Romania).

After the explosion, about 80 personnel from the Emergency Situations Inspectorate were deployed to Constanta, the main seaport on the Black Sea.

The incident comes a week after a Russian drone crashed into an apartment block in Galați, near the border with Ukraine, causing two injuries.

The device hit the tenth floor of a residential building and its explosive charge completely detonated, causing a fire. EFE
