The National Service of Meteorology and Hydrology of Peru (Senamhi) has issued the Notice N°099 – RED Danger Levelwarning about a significant increase in wind speed on the Peruvian coast. He freak is expected from Sunday March 22 to Tuesday March 24, 2026 and could generate rising dust and sand, as well as a reduction in horizontal visibility, mainly affecting the coastal areas of several departments.
The meteorological agency attached to the Ministry of the Environment (Minam) indicated that this event considered a ‘dangerous phenomenon‘ could be accompanied by cloud cover with fog and mist, especially during the early morning hours, early morning hours and at dusk, increasing the risk of accidents and making visibility on roads and open areas difficult.
On Sunday, March 22, winds of up to 32 kilometers per hour are expected on the north coast, around 34 kilometers per hour on the central coast, 20 kilometers per hour on the south coast and values close to 40 kilometers per hour on the coast of Ica.
For Monday, March 23, an increase in the intensity of the winds is expected until reaching red danger level. The estimated speeds will be 37 kilometers per hour on the north coast, 34 kilometers per hour on the central coast, 20 kilometers per hour on the south coast and even 46 kilometers per hour on the coast of Ica.
On Tuesday, March 24, the winds are expected to remain at 32 kilometers per hour on the north coast, 34 kilometers per hour on the central coast, 20 kilometers per hour on the south coast and 40 kilometers per hour in the Ica area.
The departments under alert are: Áncash, Arequipa, Callao, Ica, La Libertad, Lambayeque, Lima, Moquegua, Piura and Tacna. In the Lima region, the most affected provinces will be Metropolitan Lima, Barranca, Cañete, Huaral and Huaura.
He red level warning indicates that meteorological phenomena of great magnitude and danger are predicted. The authorities recommend that the population stay informed about the evolution of the event, strictly comply with official instructions and avoid traveling through areas exposed to wind and dust, as well as open roads on the coast. It is recommended to pay special attention to reduced visibility during the early morning and evening hours.
