Will the Digital Vote be used in the 2026 Elections?: in December the future of a new way of voting will be decided

The future of the implementation of the new “digital vote” will be defined in the coming days. On December 19, the National Election Jury (JNE) will present an audit report that will be key to defining whether this new form of voting will be applied in the 2026 General Elections.

Roberto Burneo Bermejopresident of the JNE, announced at a press conference that the decision will be based on criteria of transparency and citizen trust, stressing that the report will be essential to define whether citizens will be able to exercise their right to vote through digital platforms.

“He December 19exactly, is the date that we have estimated as the presentation of the final reportwhich must be submitted to the Plenary Session of the National Elections Jury. Then, informed to the ONPE so that, if there are observations or recommendations, within the period that we establish, they can raise them or not,” he told RPP.

Burneo Bermejo explained that the digital voting system, run by the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE) Since its regulation in March, it has undergone an evaluation by a technical committee specialized in cybersecurity. This team supervises the legality, transparency and security of the system.

Citizens who access this modality of voting will be able cast your vote through a digital platformusing an electronic device such as cell phone, tablet, desktop computer or laptop.

  • Own a National Electronic Identity Document (DNIe) with current digital certificates at least until June 8, 2026, as well as having the PIN registered with the National Registry of Identification and Civil Status (Reniec).

  • Have a means of reading the DNIe suitable for the device: physical reader for computers or a cell phone or tablet with NFC technology compatible with the ISO 14443-B standard in the case of the most recent versions of the electronic DNI.

According to the Law No. 32270the modality of digital vote will be applied on a mandatory basis for members of the Armed forces and the National Police of Peru who, for service reasons, are displaced and are on election day in a place other than the registered address.

The regulations also establish other groups that may opt for digital voting:

  • Active members of the Armed Forces and the National Police of Peru who are not displaced outside their domicile registered with the National Registry of Identification and Civil Status (Reniec).
  • Peruvians residing abroad.
  • Assistance and administrative staff of public and private health establishments, including police and military hospitals.
  • Staff of the National Penitentiary Institute.
  • Members of the General Corps of Volunteer Firefighters of Peru.
  • Workers of the National Election Jury (JNE), Reniec and the ONPE.
  • Citizens with disabilities registered in the National Registry of Persons with Disabilities of the National Council for the Integration of Persons with Disabilities or included as such in the electoral roll.
  • Citizens with registered address in the Cercado de Lima district before Reniec.
