With more than 30 politicians as candidates for the presidency of the Republicthe 2026 race has become one of the most controversial, due to the large number of options there will be. One of the candidates for the presidential seat is Carlos Espá, journalist and representative of SíCreo. His candidate for the first vice presidency will be Alejandro Santa María and the second vice presidency will be Melitza Yanzich.
Although he is a little-known character for the younger generations – he was a presenter on Cuarto Poder in the early 2000s – he has begun to give statements about the ideas he would like to implement in the country.
In one of the first debates that have been organized towards 2026, in Arequipa, Espá assured that there is a disconnection between Parliament and the “demands of the population.” During his speech, he insisted on the urgency of “correcting the functioning of Congress and regaining the trust of citizens in the institutions.”
In an interview with Peru21 At the beginning of the year, Espá presented his vision of democracy in Peru. “Democracy has been stupid, negligent, indolent and insensitive”he said in March of this year. For the pre-candidate, a third of citizens maintain a fair claim against a democratic system that does not adequately respond to their needs.
He stressed that his group is working on a government plan divided into five columns: the fight against corruption by reducing procedures. “We are the only party that He is already preparing his government plan. “We are in the second draft,” he declared in the aforementioned interview.
In relation to corruption, spá attributed much of this problem to the State’s own design and the perverse incentives that, according to him, encourage bad practices. “The State is not the solution, it is the problem. It generates corruption with perverse incentives,” he stated. Among his proposals is the elimination of public financing for political parties and the increase of the electoral fence, which, in his perspective, could generate a more efficient and representative Congress.
On the other hand, he emphasized the right to digital connectivity as an essential element today and criticized that a significant part of the population does not have access to the Internet or basic services such as water.
In the brief overview of voting intention, Carlos Espá appears among the candidates observed in recent measurements. According to the survey of Opinion & Market CIT Per , Rafael Lopez Aliaga leads the preference with 15.3%, while the comedian Carlos Alvarez surprises with 7.2%. The list is followed by names like Keiko Fujimori (6.1%), Cesar Acuna (6%) and Mario Vizcarra (5.8%). “Others” adds up to 6.4% and includes figures such as the journalist, George Forsyth, Francisco Diez Canseco, Jorge del Castillo, Roberto Chiabra and Fernando Olivera.
The result suggests a fragmented scenario, where new and traditional figures seek to renew themselves in front of the electorate. The movement in trends and the reconfiguration of the board, which so far does not reveal strong favorites beyond the current first place.
