This Monday, November 10, the Chamber of Deputies postponed, at the request of Ricardo Monreal Ávilathe meeting of the Constitutional Points Commission in which it was planned to discuss the draft opinion to change the date of the revocation of the mandate in order to make it coincide with the 2027 midterm elections.
He Article 35 of the Constitution establishes that the revocation of the mandate must be carried out ““On a date that does not coincide with federal or local election days,” this is to guarantee fairness in the elections..
If the mandate revocation exercise coincides with the midterm election, lPresident Claudia Sheinbaum would go to the polls at the same time as the candidates for 15 governorships and the Chamber of Deputieswarns the opposition.
According to the regulatory law itself, “The mandate revocation process is the instrument of participation requested by citizens to determine the early termination of the performance of the office of the person holding the Presidency of the Republic, based on the loss of trust.”
In April 2021, the then president Andrés Manuel López Obrador experienced the first exercise of the revocation of his mandate. This event was held months before the midterm election with the objective that the presidential figure would not influence the electoral process.
During this weekend, on her tours around the country, President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo expressed that in 2027 the people will have to decide between moving forward with the Fourth Transformation or returning to the corruption of the past, which for some political analysts represents a possible intention to influence the electorate.
The decision of postpone the discussion on the electoral reform initiative in the Chamber of Deputies was supported by the Morena deputy Ricardo Monrealwho stressed the need to avoid haste in the legislative process.
Monreal explained that various actors asked him not to rush the approval and grant an additional period of time to analyze the issue in greater depth.
“They have asked me not to be hasty, that we wait today and that we can do it after a few days of analyzing the issue. They consider that it is a surprise, that is what they have said publicly and they have commented on it to me.”
The president of the Political Coordination Board specified that the request consists of granting “a few days, that is not hasty. We are not doing anything improper and if we are not doing it, if the historical, moral, political reason assists us, we do not have to precipitate such an important issue.”
Monreal expressed his willingness to dialogue with the parliamentary coordinators to inform them that he accepted the suggestion of extending the discussion period. In addition, he indicated that he will talk with Alfonso Ramirez Cuellarauthor of the initiative, with the aim of allowing a broader debate.
