WhatsApp: how to disable Meta AI from the application and why to do it

How to disable Meta AI in WhatsApp It is one of the most common doubts among users. However, it is important to know that Meta AI is a feature built into the platform, just like calls or stickers, and cannot be disabled completely.

Given this, users can reduce its presence by taking some actions: eliminate the chat with Meta AI, avoid mentioning it in groups or individual conversations and delete their data from the Meta server. In this way, it is possible to limit interaction with artificial intelligence within the application.

To reduce the presence of Meta AI on WhatsApp, users can:

  • Delete the chat with Meta AI as if it were any other conversation.
  • If you want to delete the data stored by Meta AI, you can use the “/reset-ai” command. Doing so resets the tool to its initial state and the copy of the conversation saved on Meta’s servers is deleted.
  • Avoid mentioning the AI in groups or individual chats. This refers to the “@meta ai” command.

Some users propose using older versions of WhatsApp. However, this is not recommended, since older versions often have vulnerabilities that can compromise the security of the device.

It is not possible to disable Meta AI in WhatsApp, as it is a function integrated into the platform. In this regard, Joshua Breckman, director of International Communications at WhatsApp, explained to the British media Standard that the tool operates “like any other function” within the application.

This impossibility has generated concern in Europe. Slovak parliamentarian Veronika Cifrová Ostrihoňová expressed in x (formerly Twitter) that the lack of control over artificial intelligence raises “serious questions about user control and digital security.”

According to him, he has received numerous inquiries from citizens and has already addressed the issue at a meeting of the European Parliament’s Single Market Committee, raising the matter directly to Executive Vice President and Commissioner Henna Virkkunen.

In this situation, users can only choose to reduce the presence and interactions with artificial intelligence within WhatsApp.

For many users, the decision to reduce or deactivate the presence of Meta AI in WhatsApp is motivated mainly by privacy issues, since when interacting with artificial intelligence, some of the information can be processed and stored on Meta servers.

Those who prefer to keep their conversations completely private often limit this feature to avoid further data collection.

Another common reason is personal preference: some users do not want artificial intelligence intervention in their chats, as they may consider it invasive or feel that it affects the traditional messaging experience.

However, Meta AI can also be useful for those who decide to use it. It offers instant responses, content suggestions, and message writing assistance, making conversations quick and easy.

To use Meta AI safely on WhatsApp, it is important to take some basic precautions:

  • Avoid sharing sensitive information, such as passwords, banking details or personal information, in your interactions with Meta AI.
  • Adjust your privacy settings in WhatsApp to control what data can be collected and stored.
  • If you want to limit the presence of Meta AI, delete the chat, do not mention it in groups, and delete the associated information from the Meta server.
  • Keep the app updated for the latest security and data protection features.
  • Use Meta AI only for general queries or assistance, avoiding sharing sensitive information.
  • Remember that Meta AI is optional and you can restrict its use based on your privacy preferences.
