The next president of the United States will be elected on Tuesday, November 5. The decision is mainly between Democrat Kamala Harris and Republican Donald Trump. States are closing the polls in a staggered manner throughout the country and the results will begin to arrive shortly thereafter.
At LR we bring you the summary of what time each state closes its polls, taking Eastern Standard Time as a reference, which is the same as in Colombia.
The states that close their polls at 6:00 p.m. are Indiana and Kentucky. In these states 19 electoral votes are at stake, 11 for Indiana and eight for Kentucky.
At 7:00 p.m. they close their polls Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, New Hampshire, Vermont and Virginia. At this time, 74 electoral votes are at stake, 85 in total. Florida being the one that contributes the most with 29 and New Hampshire the least with three.
North Carolina, Ohio and West Virginia close at 7:30 p.m. At the close of this hour, 159 electoral votes will have been played. 38 in these three states. North Carolina is one of the most disputed territories and one of the most important, since a victory for Harris in this could condemn the former president.
Half an hour later, at 8:00 p.m. Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, New Jersey, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Tennessee and Texas. They will have closed their polls. This will be a fundamental moment for the presidential race, since it is most likely that whoever wins the 19 electoral votes in Pennsylvania and the 16 in Michigan will be the new president.
At 8:30 p.m. the state of Arkansas closes its polls. There is not much mystery in this one, since Trump is expected to take the six electoral votes easily.
Arizona, Colorado, Iowa, Louisiana, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Mexico, New York, Wisconsin and Wyoming close their polls at 9:00 p.m. Just like Pennsylvania and Michigan, Wisconsin rounds out the “Blue Wall” states; if Trump wins at least one of these, he will likely win the White House as well.
Arriving at 10:00 p.m., Idaho, Montana, Nevada and Utah are the ones that close their polls. Harris hopes to keep Nevada as hers, since Democrats have won this state since 2008. However, Trump has been ahead in the polls.
California, Oregon, Washington, Hawaii and Alaska are the latest states to close voting. The first three at 23:00 and the two extraterritorial ones at 00:00 on November 6. When the polls close in the last states, citizens should already have an idea of who will be the new president.
