To compensate for the wait of her fans, the singer confirmed a few days ago her participation in Spotify Anniversaries, a special project of the music streaming platforms that celebrates the career of the most important artists with a live session in which they reinterpret some of their most important songs.
In the case of Shakira, she chose to perform a selection of songs with which she celebrates key anniversaries in her career. On the one hand, the 30 years of Bare Feetthe album that allowed his career to take off and achieve an international projection hitherto unthinkable for Colombian music from which his first hits such as I’m here either Anthology.
Besides, the singer decided to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the publication of Oral Fixation (Vol. 1 & 2)one of the most ambitious of his career and from which themes such as January Day, Those of intuition, either Hips Don’t Lieone of the biggest hits of his career and chosen as the official anthem of the 2006 World Cup in Germany.
This is precisely one of the new versions that most captures the attention of the singer’s fans, because it added Ed Sheeran and Beéle as guests. Thus, one day after the premiere of the Spotify Anniversaires episode (which includes a talk with Shakira reflecting on her creative process and telling anecdotes from her career), the platform broadcast a few seconds of the new version of Hips Don’t Lie.
The preview shows the singer, performing the song as a duet with Sheeran (with whom he already collaborated on the soundtrack of Zootopia 2), while the Brit uses his inevitable acoustic guitar. However, the advance decided to keep Beéle’s part to himself, which continued to fuel the concern of his fans.
It is worth remembering that in total there are five songs chosen by the Barranquilla native for this special release, the ones chosen being Anthology and Bare Feet, White Dreams for his LP Bare Feetwhile Oral Fixationthe singer chose to reinterpret January Day and The Wall of the first volume, and the aforementioned Hips Don’t Lie of the second.
In fact, the song is an adaptation of Dance Like Thisa song that Wyclef Jean had recorded in 2004 as a soloist. After getting together with Shakira, they added details such as sampling the trumpets used in Loves like ours by Jerry Rivera, who ended up defining this new version and consolidating the Colombian in the US market.
The Colombian remembered that story during her time in The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon last May, on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the release of the single. However, because the collaboration took place when the printing of the second volume of Fijación Oral was already beginning, the singer had to convince Donny Ienner, the then president of Sony Music, to withdraw the already printed albums from the market, in order for her to join. Hips Don’t Lie in the song list.
“I told him, ‘You have to believe me. You have to trust me. If you do, we will have a success.'”Shakira recalled in the interview with Fallon. Despite the risk, the Barranquilla woman’s instincts were correct, since Hips Don’t Lie topped Billboard’s Hot 100 in 2005, becoming one of the biggest hits of his career.
