The curiosity of José Eduardo Derbez about his parents’ relationship, Victoria Ruffo and Eugenio Derbezonce again put the reasons that united two of the most recognized figures on Mexican television at the center of the public conversation.
During a recent broadcast of the ‘Mixologando’ podcast, the actor asked his mother a direct question about the origin of her bond with the comedian, which led the actress to share unpublished and thoughtful details about her personal story.
The actress, known as ‘Queen of soap operas’was invited by her son to discuss the sentimental past she shares with Derbez, a relationship that, despite having ended almost thirty years ago, continues to generate interest both for the way it ended and for the public exchanges that both maintain.
In the podcast, José Eduardo expressed his bewilderment at the apparent lack of affinity between his parents: “I was intrigued and I even talked about it with several people, because it was a topic of conversation at a large table, I know my parents very well (…) what did they see,” the actor asked his mother in Mixology.
The response of Victoria Ruffo It didn’t take long to arrive, although it was full of irony and self-criticism. “That’s what you say, that’s what you think…”, replied the actress, while her son joked about the nature of their relationship: “Well, I guess they saw everything, otherwise I wouldn’t have been born, but now that I see them, it’s like what happened to the two of them, what did they like, because they just didn’t.”
In a relaxed tone, Ruffo admitted: “Right now, right now, at this point in life, I say the same thing, I don’t know what I saw in him, what I liked, because he is ugly, he is a clown, he is cool (…)”. Given this comment, Eugenio Derbez He intervened with humor: “How beautifully he expresses himself,” to which Ruffo responded: “Well, little by little I discovered all those ‘flying wonders’.”
The conversation moved towards a deeper reflection on the elements that usually bring a couple together. José Eduardo insisted: “But my question was not that, but what they said, ‘look, we have something to do with this, we are similar in this, we both like this’, which is what you are looking for when you start a relationship.” After a pause, the actress acknowledged: “Well, yes,” although her son finished: “You just can’t find it.”
José Eduardo himself suggested that his father “caught her distracted, there was just nowhere,” while Ruffo recalled the early days of the relationship: “No, well, I became an intelligent person in the sense that he wrote his sketcheshis stuff, I went to see him several times at his shows, they were good, but nothing more.”
The sense of humor of Eugenio Derbez emerged as one of the determining factors in the initial attraction. José Eduardo stressed: “He made you laugh (…) I have always said that making you laugh is very important, fall in love, that they have a sense of humor, from that to making you feel angry, it is better that they make you laugh.”
Ruffo agreed that this trait was decisive, although he clarified: “But they also make you feel angry and over time you say, ‘what happened, what did you see, you were drunk, asleep.'”
The relationship between Victoria Ruffo and Eugenio Derbez ended in 1996, marked by the episode of the ‘fake wedding’ and a prolonged legal dispute over the parental rights of his son. Ruffo considered the ceremony a hoax, while Derbez maintained that both knew it was a symbolic act.
The situation was aggravated by the court battle, which, according to Derbez, prevented him from seeing his son for several years. The story of this couple, far from losing validity, continues to be a source of analysis and conversation in the Mexican public sphere.
