United States sanctions members of the CNE and Supreme Court of Venezuela

The United States issued new measures on Thursday sanctions related to Venezuelaagainst 16 people aligned with President Nicolás Maduro, the Treasury Department reported.

The sanctioned individuals include leaders of the National Electoral Council and the Supreme Court of Justice, who according to the Treasury “prevented a transparent electoral process and the publication of accurate election results.”

The sanctions also targeted military, intelligence and government officials responsible for escalating repression in the country.the Treasury said. Maduro was already sanctioned in 2017.

The measures come after opposition leader Edmundo González, wanted by the Venezuelan authorities, he sought asylum in Spain.
