With the issue of drug trafficking in Latin America, a new case of drug transport comes to light in Panama since, the Drug Prosecutor’s Office and the country’s National Police They seized 39 packages with alleged drug inside a container in a Pacific port.
The merchandise was found in a container that came from Morocco and headed towards New Zealand. Given this, the Panamanian authorities warn about the importance of strengthening port surveillance and improving the use of scanners to stop drug trafficking.
However, uncertainty grows since, during August about seven tons of drugs in containers have been seized throughout different port terminals in Panama, which has led to increase security controls in the area.
Panama throughout history has been one of the key points of transport to the whole world, therefore and given this problem, high security controls met to coordinate efforts and face drug trafficking more firmly, especially those to Europe.
According to data from the Ministry of Public Security, between January and June 2025, 68 tons of drugs have been seized: 25 tons in Columbus, 15.9 in Panama City and 10.9 in Darien.
Given this problem, President Raúl Mulino said that strengthening security in the province of Columbus and in the Panamanian ports is a fundamental priority of his government. “It is necessary to move Columbus away from evil living”, He said, highlighting the significant effort that is being made to provide the region with more resources in terms of military and police personnel, as well as technology.
Mulino explained that collaboration with the port authorities, the National Customs Authority, the National Migration Service and the National Police have strengthened To stop drug shipments to Europe, a situation that qualified as unsustainable and compromises port security.
