The temporary interruption of traffic in one of the main East Lima connection roads once again put on the agenda a problem that residents have been denouncing for years: the difficulties in safely crossing sectors with high traffic flow. The protest registered in Lurigancho-Chosica reflected the concern of families, students and older adults who They use Ramiro Prialé Avenue daily.
During the night, a group of neighbors took to the streets to demand measures that reduce the risk to pedestrians. The mobilization was concentrated near the Carapongo bridge, in an area where, according to residents, traffic accidents occur frequently and safety conditions are insufficient for those who need to cross the road.
The situation also generated traffic congestion due to the blockade of the highway, a route used by thousands of people moving between different sectors of Eastern Lima. The main demand of the protesters points to the implementation of infrastructure and control mechanisms that allow safer crossings.
According to information released by Successfulthe neighbors blocked Ramiro Prialé Avenue at the height of the Carapongo bridge. During the demonstration, participants burned tires and restricted the passage of vehicles as a pressure measure to draw the attention of the authorities.
The protest lasted approximately one hour and prompted the intervention of agents from the National Police of Peru due to the congestion that formed in the area. However, residents pointed out that the police presence during the mobilization does not solve the problems they face daily when trying to cross the road.
According to the report issued from the scene, the neighbors warned that they could carry out new protests if you do not receive a concrete response of the responsible authorities.
One of the main questions from residents is related to the absence of elements that facilitate safe pedestrian transit. During the interviews, several neighbors expressed concern about the situation faced by children and older adults.
“There is nothing, especially for the children who go to school. Also, the elderly cannot cross, how are so many cars coming to cross?” said a neighbor during the protest.
The testimonies also referred to the need to build a pedestrian bridge or install a vehicle control system that allows ordering traffic. Another resident said: “Of course, the pedestrian bridge or the traffic light.”
The demand arises at a point where, according to the neighbors themselves, there is a constant circulation of pedestrians and smaller vehicles who need to cross the avenue to access different sectors of Carapongo.
The protesters stated that traffic accidents are part of a constant problem in the area. During the statements collected, the residents indicated that there is a history of injured and deceased people.
“We are already tired. So many wounded, so many dead. Where can we go?” said a neighbor when describing the situation that motivated the mobilization.
When asked about the frequency of accidents, the same resident responded: “Yes, constantly.”
Another neighbor indicated that the protest arose after several episodes recorded in the place. “There are already several accidents,” he stated, insisting on the need to adopt preventive measures to avoid new cases.
Criticism directed at the municipal authorities also arose during the protest. One of the neighbors consulted stated your disagreement with the response received so far in response to the requests of the population.
“So the mayor already turns a blind eye because the mayor really doesn’t take matters into his own hands in this case,” he declared.
Residents insisted that their main objective is to obtain concrete measures to improve road safety in the area. Among the alternatives mentioned during the protest are the construction of a pedestrian bridge and the installation of a traffic light that would allow traffic to be organized and facilitate pedestrian crossing.
