The U.S. Department of Justice said Wednesday that it filed a lawsuit against Texas to challenge a immigration law called Senate Bill 4which the DOJ described as “clearly unconstitutional.”
The law defines as state crime illegal entry or reentry in Texas from a foreign country and gives state and local law enforcement the power to detain and prosecute violators. It also authorizes state judges to order the deportation of people, with sentences of up to 20 years in prison for immigrants who refuse to comply.
