The United States has imposed sanctions on one person and additional sanctions on two entities related to Cubaaccording to a notice posted Thursday on the U.S. Treasury Department website.
The State Department said the sanctions target the Business Administration Group, Gaesa, a conglomerate involved in all sectors of Cuba’s economy and controlled by its military; Ania Guillermina Lastres Morera, executive president of Gaesa; and MNSA, Moa Nickel SA, a joint venture between Toronto-based Sherritt International Corp, S.TO and the Cuban state-owned nickel company.
The government of US President Donald Trump has intensified pressure on Cuba this yearinterrupting oil shipments from Venezuela, which for a long time was Havana’s main supplier, and threatening to intensify economic sanctions against the communist-ruled island.
Sherritt announced Thursday in a statement posted on its website that it had suspended its direct participation in joint venture activities in Cuba.with immediate effect.
