The Prosecutor’s Office requests 2 years for Vito Quiles for denigrating a woman with a disability

Madrid, Apr 23 (EFE).- The Prosecutor’s Office requests two years in prison for Vito Quiles and a year and a half for Javier Negre for a crime against the dignity and integrity of a woman with intellectual disabilities whom the former interviewed to broadcast her testimony on the television presided over by the latter, and after which both published the interview on social networks.

This is the indictment in which the Prosecutor’s Office requests the opening of an oral trial against both and against the EDA group (Estado de Alarma TV) as subsidiary civil party, after the investigation carried out in the investigating court number 43 of Madrid. The complaint came from the group in which the victim is a member.

In the document, to which EFE has had access, the Prosecutor’s Office recounts the interview carried out by Vito Quiles on March 20, 2024 at the PP headquarters on Génova Street, during a citizen protest, “guided by the intention of denigrating” the affected person “due to her disability and the political ideas that he attributed to her.”

The interview was broadcast on EDATV with the connivance of the president of this medium, Javier Negre, and both of them also spread it on social networks, promoting derogatory comments towards the interviewee, who suffered “feelings of humiliation and restlessness, with impairment of her dignity,” says the Public Ministry.

Specifically, the Prosecutor’s Office reports that on March 20, 2024, the woman, who has a recognized intellectual disability of 75 percent and whose situation “can be noticed by anyone who briefly talks to her,” was demonstrating in the vicinity of the PP headquarters with her mother and, at a time when he separated from her, Vito Quiles approached her as a reporter for EDATV.

He interviewed her despite the “obvious difficulties” that the woman had in answering or arguing her answers, and published it, along with other testimonies, “guided by the intention of denigrating her, due to her disability and the political ideas that he attributed to her.”

He also published it on X “being fully aware of the comments that would subsequently be generated on the social network, with messages of humiliating content for the victim from third parties.”

The Prosecutor’s Office details that Quiles’ account had 300,570 followers when he published the video, which he urged to see and give “maximum dissemination”, achieving 3,300,000 views and numerous derogatory comments towards the interviewee.

For its part, the Public Ministry maintains that Javier Negre, president of EDATV, acted “guided by the same intention of belittling” the victim “due to his disability and the political ideas that he attributed to him,” and “being fully aware of the hurtful messages that were going to be generated.”

This is how he published the cut of the interview with this woman on his X profile, adding the message: “When I tell you that Sánchez’s voters can’t do more, I mean this.” The video had 374,800 views.

Two days later, and given the impact generated by the video, Javier Negre deleted it and published a message apologizing, which for the Prosecutor’s Office represents a mitigating factor for repairing the damage.

For all these reasons, the Prosecutor’s Office considers both investigated co-authors of a crime against fundamental rights in the form of injury to the dignity of people, in conjunction with a crime against moral integrity.

For Quiles he asks for two years in prison, a fine of 10,800 euros and special disqualification for a profession or educational occupation for six years, and for Negre eighteen years in prison, a fine of 9,000 euros and the same disqualification as the first but for five years. And that both jointly compensate the victim with 8,000 euros. EFE
