The president of Paraguay, Santiago Peña, announced Monday that he will undertake a trip to Rome next Saturday, where he will attend the enthronement ceremony of the new Pontiff. Peña highlighted the deep faith of the Paraguayan people, which he described as “one of the most believers” in Latin America, and He highlighted the close ties with the Catholic Church, although the country is a secular state.
During his stay in the Vatican, The president plans to extend greetings on behalf of the Paraguayan people to the new Pope, in addition to officially inviting him to visit Paraguay.
“I hope our country is one of the first on its agenda,” he said, adding feeling “Very excited” with a pontiff who has lived an important part of his life in Latin America.
Peña valued the connection of the new church leader with the region, mentioning that he lived a third of his life in Peru, which, according to the president, represents a unique opportunity to strengthen links with Latin America.
