Colombia registered 6.9 million internally displaced people, a figure only surpassed by Sudan and Syria with 9.1 million and 7.2 million, respectively.
The number of forcibly displaced people is equivalent to the population of Mexico. This was revealed by the United Nations, organization that states that there are more than 120 million forcibly displaced people in the world until May 2024.
For its part, Colombia registered 6.9 million internally displaced peopleonly surpassed by Sudan and Syria with 9.1 million and 7.2 millionrespectively.
On the other hand, the organization states that the number of refugees worldwide amounted to 43.4 million. In the case of Venezuela, 97% of the 6.1 million registered Venezuelan citizens have remained in Latin American countries, especially in Colombia with 2.9 million, Peru with one million, Ecuador has 471,400 and Chile, which is home to 435,800.
Finally, the United Nations mentions that six million people returned to their homes in 2023, after having been victims of internal displacement; at once, one million refugees returned home in the same year.
“Last year millions of people returned home. We have seen countries like Kenya lead the way in including refugees, “But a real commitment is needed.”concluded the United Nations Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, in the statement.
