The heat truce is about to end: Aemet expects a thermal rebound in the south and colder days in the north

The most intense episode of heat at the end of May and beginning of June has given way to a week of stability marked by the anticyclonewith a decrease in maximum temperatures in much of Spain and a more contained thermal rebound in the south and southwest. On Sunday, after several days above 41 degrees, the highest temperature remained at 37.3 degrees in El Granado, in Huelva, and Montoro, in Córdoba.

According to the forecast of the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), this Monday the clear skies in most of the country, although a not very active front It will leave cloudiness and weak rains in Galicia and the Cantabrian area. In the interior of the Valencian Community and nearby areas, the maximum temperatures will rise significantly, with increases of more than six degrees, while in the eastern Cantabrian Sea and the upper Ebro they will fall by more than ten degrees. The forecast for the start of the week maintains 34 degrees in depressions in the northeast and in low areas of the southern half, with peaks of 37 in the Guadalquivir. Tropical nights – those in which the mercury does not drop below 20 degrees – are also expected in La Mancha and the Guadalquivir valley.

On Tuesday, stability will continue in almost the entire country. In the Cantabrian Sea and the upper Ebro, cloudiness will remain, with weak rains that are increasingly less likely on the coast, and in the afternoon isolated storms may form in mountain areas of the eastern interior.

As for thermometers, the maximum temperatures will drop in the northern third, the Balearic Islands and the interior of the eastern peninsula, with notable drops of more than six degrees in the Cantabrian mountain range, the northeast of the northern plateau, the Ebro valley and the Iberian system. On the contrary, they will increase in Badajoz and Huelva and will hardly change in the rest. They can be exceed 35 degrees in the southwest quadrant and 38 in the Guadalquivir, while the minimums will drop in the northern half and rise in the southern half, with sharper increases in Catalonia, the Valencian Community and Extremadura. The tropical nights of Tuesday will be concentrated in the Guadalquivir and on the Mediterranean coast. In Canary Islands no thermal changes are expected.

On Wednesday, the influence of the anticyclone will reinforce stability and leave generally clear skies. Low clouds are only expected in the north of the islands, the Cantabrian area, the Pyrenees and, in the morning, in the Strait and on the Alboran and Mediterranean coasts, with the possibility of weak and isolated rainfall in the north. However, throughout the afternoon clouds will develop again in the interior of the eastern third and an isolated storm or shower in mountain areas cannot be ruled out. The maximums will drop in the Balearic Islands, the eastern third and the extreme south of the peninsula, they will rise in the north and the northwest and will remain unchanged in the rest, with more than 35 degrees in low areas of the southwest.

On Thursday the anticyclonic influence will continue in almost the entire country, with stable weather and clear skies or with some high clouds. Low morning clouds are only expected in the Cantabrian area, the Pyrenees, the interior of Valencia, Ceuta and Melilla, and in the afternoon some evolving clouds could appear in the center of the peninsula.

Looking ahead to this day, temperatures will rise in the northern half, the Valencian Community, the north of the southern plateau, Extremadura and the coast of Huelva, while they will drop in the Strait, Ceuta and Melilla. Temperatures may exceed 35 degrees in the southwest quadrant and reach between 37 and 38 degrees in the Guadiana and Guadalquivir valleys, with tropical nights in the river valleys of the southwest and on the Mediterranean coast.
