Representatives of the Montevideo teachers’ union, Ademu, were received this Monday morning by President Yamandú Orsi in the Executive Tower, after three days of strike following the incidents in Jardines del Hipódromo this Wednesday.
Outside the Presidency, a mobilization – which also included secondary school teachers – demanded security for workers and a greater budget for education.
One of the protesters’ chants aimed directly at Orsi, recalling his profession as a history teacher: “Let’s see, let’s see, Mr. President, have you forgotten what it is to be a teacher?“.
After the meeting, the general secretary of Ademu, Paola López, valued “political gestures” that mark “advance” to resolve the conflict. Anyway, He announced that it will be the union assembly that will decide this afternoon whether or not the strike will continue on Tuesday.
“There is a commitment to management and public policies, guaranteed by the Ministry of the Interior on the one hand and on the other hand to social work with greater support from the teams working in the territory to strengthen the teaching team,” said López.
Specifically, in school No. 123 of Jardines del Hipódromo, there will be “increased patrolling, continuous presence in the territory (of the Police) and it will be given priority so that it can function,” said the union leader.
Upon leaving the Executive Tower, The president of Codicen Pablo Caggiani had a brief encounter with a protester, who blocked his path and made a complaint.
