The Argentine government has limited travel expenses for officials traveling abroad

Javier Milei’s Government modified the travel allowance regime for officials traveling abroad for official reasons and introduced a series of controls to limit their spending.

The measure was made official through administrative decision 888/2024, published this Wednesday in the Official Gazette, signed by the Chief of Staff, Guillermo Francos.

“Transfers to carry out official missions or commissions abroad must be carried out by the shortest and least expensive means; Both factors must be taken into account, with the first taking priority over the second, both on the way there and on the way back. In order to process the trips in the aforementioned terms, they must be managed with sufficient advance notice, in order to enable access to the best rates and routes offered by the market.” the regulations say.

The Executive pointed out that, in all cases, the airline that operates “the shortest route and has the most appropriate fare” must be selected. In this regard, the text no longer establishes that priority should be given to airlines owned by the National State, as Administrative Decision 836/2022 stated.

Tickets, for their part, must be issued by the same airline, on a round trip route, when this would be the most economical option.

According to this rule, it will now be Guillermo Francos who must authorize the transfers of the ministers or secretaries of the presidency of the Nation, “regardless of the rank of the official involved”, using an official form.

It will be responsible for “approving official missions and commissions abroad.”In the case of ministers, secretaries of the Presidency, deputy chiefs of staff of the Office of the Chief of Ministers, other officials with the rank and hierarchy of minister, and other officials who are directly dependent on him/her.
