The Aemet warns of the arrival of rain, storms and snowfall in these areas of Spain

Spain enters a new week marked by rains and storms. May arrives under the clouds accompanied by a thermal drop which has already caused a drop in the thermometers, which this Monday are around 25 degrees maximum in the south of the peninsula and 15 degrees in the northern half, but will continue to drop during the following days. What’s more, this fall in mercury will cause snowfall on the summits from the north of the peninsula.

The forecast of the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) for this Monday shows that the situation of instability will persist in the northern half, where precipitation accompanied by storms and, at times, hail. In the south, the skies will remain slightly cloudy, although in the southeast there could be isolated showers. The public body expects the water to fall in the form of snow at levels above between 1,600 and 1,800 meters in the Cantabrian mountain range and 2,000 meters in the rest of the northern mountains. Given this scenario, Aemet has activated the yellow warning (low risk) due to rain and storms in several autonomous communities: Aragón, Cantabria, Castilla y León, Catalonia, Navarra, the Basque Country, La Rioja and the Valencian Community.

Regarding mercury, the most pronounced drop in maximum temperatures will occur in the eastern Cantabrian Sea. In the northern half, the maximum temperatures will not reach 20 degrees while in the southern half they may reach 25 degrees and may even exceed them.

On Tuesday, instability will continue in the northern third and in the Balearic Islands, with predominantly cloudy skies and precipitation that may be accompanied by storm and, locally, hail. In the northeastern third and the eastern Cantabrian Sea, there are chances of locally intense rains during the afternoon. In the mountains of the northern half the snow will returnwith levels around 1,500 meters in the northwest and up to 1,800 meters in the rest. Meanwhile, the rest of the northern half will have cloudy intervals and the probability of occasional showers, more pronounced in the eastern mountain areas. The southern half of the peninsula will remain stable, with clear or slightly cloudy skies and possible isolated showers in the southeast, as specified by the Aemet, although this calm will last little. In the Canary archipelago, clear skies or cloudy intervals will predominate; Only some showers are expected in mountainous areas.

During the day on Wednesday, most of the peninsula will experience a stable time. However, the extreme north will experience cloudy skies and precipitation, with a high probability that in the Pyrenees the snow will reach from 1,500 meters. The rest will continue with clear skies or with increasing medium and high cloudiness in the southern half and evolving cloudiness in the afternoon in the northern half and the eastern end, where there could be scattered showers. The Balearic Islands will present abundant cloudiness and the possibility of isolated showers, especially in Mallorca linked to the diurnal cycle, tending to clear throughout the afternoon. In the case of the Canary Islands, the south will show a predominance of clear skies, while the north will alternate cloudiness with probable showers on the mountainous islands.

Rains and storms spread across Spain

On Thursday, the forecast points to a new destabilization of the atmosphere over the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands, due to the formation of a low to the west, over which there is significant uncertainty as to its final position. In the morning, intervals of low clouds will predominate in the extreme north without precipitation, although during the day abundant development of cloudiness is expected, giving rise to showers and storms. These phenomena may be locally strong in the Iberian and Cantabrian regions, and are not expected in the southwest area. In the peaks of the Pyrenees, the snow will be above 2,000 meters. The Canary Islands will continue with slightly cloudy skies in the south and cloudy skies in the north, with some showers on the most mountainous islands.

Looking ahead to Friday and the arrival of the weekend, the current forecast shows widespread rain over much of the country and a new drop in temperatures in the southern half, with expected maximums of 20 degrees in this area and close to 15 degrees in the northern half.
