Four hours after the election of the first Senate Board of Directors for the legislative period, an internal decision opened a new political front within Together for Peru. The controversy arose from the fulfillment of an agreement related to voting during the session in which Michael Torresfrom Fuerza Popular, was elected president of the chamber.
The episode occurred after the groups that made up the opposition bloc will agree to publicly show the meaning of their vote in order to avoid last minute changes. The measure sought to guarantee transparency during an election considered decisive for the formation of the new Senate leadership.
However, the actions of Senator Silvana Robles generated questions within her own group. The legislator decided not to show her vote, a fact that led to a meeting of the bench and the iinitiation of disciplinary measures announced a few hours after the election concluded.
Meanwhile, Robles responded to the accusations and explained the reasons why he chose to keep the content of his voting record confidential, despite the commitment previously assumed by the opposition bloc.
The leader of Together for Peru, Roberto Sánchez, reported that the group resolved to suspend Senator Silvana Robles after considering that he breached an agreement adopted by the parliamentary group before the election of the Senate Board of Directors.
As explained, the members of the bench jointly agreed to show the content of your vote as an act of transparency. Sánchez maintained that this commitment was not respected by Robles and confirmed the initiation of an internal procedure.
“The bench had a joint agreement to be transparent in the casting of its vote. As a discretionary right, it was appropriate to show the vote. In that sense, the parliamentarian, Senator Silvana Robles, did not do so,” he declared.
He also specified that the legislator will remain suspended from her rights within the bench while an internal investigation is underway. “The senator is suspended from now on in her rights on the bench. As long as this summary investigation lasts and if verified with due process and regulations, her expulsion will be appropriate,” he stated.
During his statement, Sánchez pointed out that the internal procedure will seek determine whether there was a violation of the agreements adopted by the parliamentary group before the vote.
The legislator maintained that any non-compliance must be evaluated in accordance with the bench’s regulations. “When a compliance agreement is made by the deputies, by the senators, it has to be fulfilled. That’s the lesson. And whoever transgresses, with due process, an investigation must be initiated for alleged conduct that all of Peru has seen,” he stated.
Likewise, he rejected that the measure represents a fracture within Together for Peru. As indicated, The suspension corresponds solely to the development of the disciplinary process and does not modify the political position of the bloc.
In addition to the announcement about Silvana Robles, Roberto Sánchez He questioned the development of the parliamentary day. He indicated that there were restrictions on the entry of the press to the legislative headquarters and expressed his disagreement with the presence of Fuerza Popular advisors during the process.
The leader also stated that the coordinators and advisors of his group did not receive the same treatment as representatives of other groups. According to him, he himself was removed from the facilities along with other members of the support team.
Sánchez maintained that these events affected the development of the election and asked that future parliamentary processes guarantee equal conditions for all parties.
