Gerardo Herreroone of the most important producers on the national film scene, has a most eclectic filmography as a director, being his penultimate work Under therapy (2023), a very theatrical comedy-drama with which he did not do badly. Now, he returns to the fray, as a director, entering espionage cinema, thanks to the novel Virgins and executioners (Salamandra, 2019), by writer and journalist Tomás Bárbulo, scripted by Irene Zoe Alameda, under the supervision of Herrero.
The story is set in the dangerous streets of the city that gives the film its title.in 2014, although the filming locations, obviously for obvious reasons, could not have been in Syria but in Morocco (Casablanca and Marrakech) and Spain (Bárdenas Reales Desert, Tafalla, Navarra). The protagonists are two infiltratorsperformed by Alvaro Morte (actor who studied at ESAD in Córdoba, now very fashionable thanks to his work in series such as The Money Heist) and El Hammani Mine (Spanish actress and model of Moroccan descent also experienced in television products such as Elite), in a fundamentalist organization in order to hunt down one of the leaders of the terrorist group ISIS, a certain El Jordano. They both arrive by different paths, he He is an international spy known as The Sahrawi (great work by Morte when building this character, which is expressed in different languages) and, on the other hand, she will be introduced as Ceuta nurse under the orders of Europol. The two, with the same mission, will end up crossing paths.
The film is shot quite correctly, taking into account that it is not a Bond-style blockbuster (Fleming), but rather with a certain reflection of the literature of John le Carré. The rhythm that has been imprinted on the action makes the 107 minutes fly by, just as Juan Carlos Gómez’s photography will take us to exotic places, illustrated with the very successful music of Paula Olaz.
Therefore, very worthy debut in the spy film genre from this interesting director and producer with a long career in both fields.
