Doctors have had to modify the treatment of Pope Francis’s respiratory road infection to deal with a “complex clinical situation” and The pontiff will remain hospitalized as long as necessary, the Vatican reported on Monday.
“The results of the tests carried out in recent days and today have demonstrated a polymicrobial infection of the respiratory tractwhich has led to a new modification of the treatment, “said a brief statement from the Holy See.
“All tests performed until today are indicative of a complex clinical picture that will require adequate hospital stay,” he added.
The 88 -year -old father has suffered a respiratory infection for more than a week and was admitted on Friday at the Gemelli Hospital in Rome.
Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said the pontiff is “in a good mood.” He did not specify whether it was a bacterial or viral infection, but said that more information about the Pope’s status would be given on Monday.
While bacterial infections can be treated with antibiotics, virals do not. Usually, viruses have to follow their course, but the patient can be helped with other medications to lower fever or help their body fight the infection.
A polymicrobial infection is caused by two or more microorganisms, and can be caused by bacteria, viruses or fungi.
The Vatican reported Monday that the Pope’s weekly audience in the Plaza de San Pedro, scheduled for Wednesday, had been canceled “due to the continuous hospitalization of the Holy Father.”
Pope’s doctors had ordered absolute rest, and Francisco could not pronounce his usual weekly prayer on Sunday to the pilgrims in the Plaza de San Pedro or direct a special mass for artists on the occasion of the jubilee year of the Catholic Church.

Manuel Rossi, a tourist from Milan, Italy, said he was “quite worried” when the father canceled his appearance on Sunday.

One of the members of the parish said that Francisco had called both Friday and Saturday and that he was in “good humor”, but seemed “a little tired.”
“Thank you for the affection, prayer and closeness with which they accompany me these days,” the Pope wrote on X on Sunday.
