Poland sent military airplanes and closed an important airport in its capital after reports that unmanned planes Russian attack crossed the country’s airspace from neighboring Ukraine.
Warsaw International Airport has been closed due to “unplanned military activity related to guaranteeing state security”, The United States Federal Aviation Administration said in a notice to aviators, or Notam.
“Poles and allied airplanes operate in our airspace, while the terrestrial systems of aerial defense and radar recognition have reached their maximum level of preparation,” said the Polish army in a statement in the morning of Wednesday. Various media reported the deployment of combat planes to intercept Russian drones Shahed that violated the Polish airspace.
Poland is found on the NATO eastern flank, border with Belarus, a key ally of Russia, and Ukraine, devastated by war. The Warsaw Government has firmly supported Ukraine efforts to defend against Russian invasion. Last month, the Polish Defense Minister accused Russia of causing a war after a military drone crashed and exploded in the east of the country.
“The Operational Command of the Armed Forces of Poland is monitoring the current situation and the forces and resources under their command remain fully prepared for an immediate response,” The Polish army said.
