Pico y Placa in Bogotá: vehicle restrictions to avoid fines this Thursday, October 23

The vehicle restriction changes depending on the day of the week, the time, the type of car and the finish of its license plate, according to the guidelines of the Bogotá Mobility Secretariat.

The program aims to reduce vehicle circulation, within the framework of a comprehensive program in order to reduce vehicular traffic, as well as high levels of environmental pollution in the city.

Since 1998, the Pico y Placa has been applied in Bogotá, that is, it has been in operation for more than two decades. This is the schedule of restrictions for this June 8, according to the city mayor’s office.

The vehicle restriction hours begin at 5:30 a.m. for taxis and special transportation, while for private cars it begins until 6:00 a.m. The vehicle restriction ends at 9:00 p.m.

For their part, cargo vehicles have two Peak and Plate schedules, the first from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. and the second from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

This is how the vehicle restriction program known as Pico y Plate works.

Private vehicles are divided into two groups according to the last digit of their license plate. The first will be made up of those cars ending in 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 and the second will be those that end in 6, 7, 8, 9 or 0.

Now, private cars with ending 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 will not circulate on even days. While those that end in 6, 7, 8, 9 or 0 will not be able to travel on odd days.

The Pico y Placa hours for private vehicles: from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Monday to Friday, except for weekends and holidays.

In the case of taxis and special transportation service vehicles, the vehicle prohibition is in a group of two: 1 and 2, 3 and 4, 5 and 6, 7 and 8, 9 and 0. The restriction for these two types of cars changes every week, so it is important to stay up to date.

Meanwhile, cargo vehicles are not allowed to travel during the Pico y Placa prohibition hours, they can only travel on Saturdays, but also conditional on the weight and age of the transport.

Unlike private vehicles, in taxis, special transportation services and cargo, the vehicle restriction applies from Monday to Friday.

These are electric, hybrid, zero-emission vehicles, motorcycles, diplomatic service vehicles, funeral homes, emergency and security vehicles, those that transport people with disabilities, traffic control and tow truck vehicles, media vehicles, judicial authorities, school transportation, those intended for automobile education and those that have an occupancy of three or more people from the beginning and until the end of the trip.

In order for your car to benefit from the exception, that is, its circulation through the Pico y Placa is not affected, it must be previously registered with the Bogotá Mobility Secretariat.

If your car is not on the exception list, but you want it to circulate every day in Bogotá, you have the possibility of applying for the so-called Pico y Placa Solidario, a permit that gives drivers the option to choose the days, weeks or months in which they can circulate freely through the city in exchange for an economic contribution, which is intended to improve the Integrated Public Transportation System of the Colombian city.

In addition to the traditional vehicle restriction, in Bogotá there is one more called Pico y Placa Regional, which applies on the last day of all holiday weekends in the nine entry corridors to the Colombian city.

The restriction for vehicles whose plates end in an odd number is from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., while for cars with even plates the ban begins at 4:00 p.m. and ends at 8:00 p.m.

The nine entry corridors to Bogotá in which the Regional Peak and Plate apply are:

North Highway: from the Andes tollbooth to the North portal.

South Highway: from the municipal limit of Soacha to Boyacá Avenue.

Centenario Avenue (13th Street): from the Bogotá River to Ciudad de Cali Avenue (Carrera 86 Avenue).

80th Street Avenue: from the Guadua bridge to portal 80.

Carrera 7 Avenue: from 245th Street to 183rd Street.

Boyacá Avenue via Llano: from the Algerino Durán Quintero tunnel to the old road to Llano.

Via Suba Cota: from the Bogotá River to 170th Street Avenue.

Via la Calera: from the Patios tollbooth to Carrera 7 avenue.

Route to Choachí: from the road to Monserrate to the ring road.

The exception vehicles that do not apply to the Regional Peak and Plate are those that have three or more occupants, those of medical personnel, or those that have the Solidarity Peak and Plate.

In the case of violating the Pico y Placa in any of its versions, the Bogotá authorities have a system of economic sanctions.

The fine during 2023 amounts to 522,900 Colombian pesos, in addition the car will be immobilized, as indicated in the National Traffic Code for violation C.14.
