Peru’s largest energy firm expects to finish expansion of solar plant in 2026

Kallpa Generation, the largest energy supplier in Peru, WAITINGS to culminate the expansion of a 330 megawatt solar plant at the beginning of 2026 in the south of the countrywhich houses large mines underway and in construction, said the company’s project director on Wednesday.

The Sunny solar plant, whose expansion would require an investment of approximately US $ 250 million, is located in the Arequipa region, where the country’s largest copper mines are located. “At the beginning of 2026, probably in March, we will end the construction of Sunny’s expansion to reach 330 megawatts,” Joaquín Coloma, project development director of the Energy Company, during a mining executive forum, told Reuters.

Kallpa generation has an installed capacity of 2,462 megawatts throughout the country, most produced in renewable energy plants such as solar, hydroelectric, wind and gas. The company, which supplies 23% of the country’s total electricity demand, placed bonds for US $ 700 million at the beginning of September to replace previous debt and partially finance the expansion of its operations.

“Mining is the largest demand in the country’s electricity sector,” said Coloma, who said that the company’s largest income comes from mining companies such as Cerro Verde and Southern Copper. “What the mining industry seeks is the reliability in the supply,” he said.

The largest mining projects are located in southern Peru with a portfolio of US $ 29,129 million45.5% of the total in the country, most in copper, according to the Ministry of Energy and Mines.

The projects include the Copper Mine of Tick Resource, of US $ 2,000 million and would start producing in 2026; and the expansion of life until 2053 of the Cerro Verde Mine of Freeport-McMoran Corp, with an investment of US $ 2.1 billion.

Peru is the third largest copper producer. “We have more projects, solar, wind, hydroelectric and gas plants throughout the country”he said, although he excused himself from offering details at the moment. To the consultation where they would be located: “We choose the best (place) depending on the demand.”
