Panama will return to the United Nations Human Rights Council, in order to submit to the mechanism known as the Universal Periodic Review, UPR, this November 5 in Geneva, Switzerland. It is important to note that this will be the fourth examination of this type that the country has undergone, since the previous ones were carried out in 2010, 2015 and 2020.
Regarding the review, it contemplates a broad analysis regarding the progress they have made five years after the review, as well as the pending issues they have in terms of human rights. Based mainly on three items: The first is the official report that Panama will present, the analysis of independent experts and UN organizationsas well as the contributions made to civil society organizations.
Likewise, this examination is carried out in order to make visible not only the institutional achievements, but also highlight the gaps that persist in terms of justice, equity and human rights, both for the vulnerable population and for other citizens.
On the other hand, in 2020, Panama showed several milestones achieved up to that point, such as the ratification of the Escazú Agreementas well as the creation of the National Mechanism for the Prevention of Torture and some progress towards gender parity through Law 56 of 2017, which requires 30% participation of women for board of directors and private boards.
Under this context, the country will appear before the UN to present its progress until 2025 and pending with respect to migration, gender issues and prison conditions.
