Panama ports exceed 7.36 million TEUs moved until September

Between January and September of this year, the Panamanian port system moved more than 7.36 million containers measured in TEUs (20-foot units), which represents an approximate growth of 2.2% compared to the same period last year.

Most of this movement corresponds to transshipment operations, which accounted for around 89% of the total.reflecting the country’s role as a logistics center for the transfer of cargo between international routes.

When reviewing performance by terminal, MIT in Colón led the volume moved, followed by Balboa in the Pacific. Further behind were CCT, PSA Panamá, and Cristóbal, while the Bocas Fruit Co. terminal recorded a marked decrease in its activity compared to the previous year.

During 2024, the port system has maintained its position as one of the most relevant logistics hubs on the continent, supported by the country’s strategic location and the connection between its terminals in the Atlantic and the Pacific. However, specialists warn that the advance of competing ports in the region requires continuing to invest in modernization, operational efficiency and strengthening of infrastructure to maintain its leadership.
