The international jury of the Valladolid International Film Week has awarded this Saturday the Golden Spike to the French ‘Mercy‘ of Alain Guiraudiewhich has also received the Miguel Delibes Award for Best Screenplayas reported by the international jury in a press conference that took place at the Teatro Calderón.

The Silver Spike has been distributed ex aequo between ‘Stranger Eyes’ by Yeo Siew Hua (Singapore) and the Spanish ‘Dust They Will’ by Carlos Marquet-Marcetwhile the Ribera del Duero award for best director has gone to the Chinese Guan Hu by ‘Black Dog‘ and the José Salcedo Award for best editing has gone to Telmo Churro and Pedro Filipe Marquesfor the Portuguese ‘Grand Tour‘directed by Miguel Gomes.

Laura Weissmahr has won the award for best actress for his performance in ‘Salve María’ by Mar Coll, while The award for best actor went ex aequo to Jan Gunnar Røisepor and Thorbjørn Harr for their performance in ‘Sex’ by Dag Johan Haugerud, as well as a special mention was given to Ángela Molina and Alfredo Castro for ‘Polvo seguir’.

“Complex gender balance”

He international jury of the Official Section, made up of the Greek director Sofia Exarchou, the Spanish actress Aida Folch, the critic and editor Devika Girish, the German producer Ingmar Trost and the Spanish director and writer Luis López Carrasco, has unanimously valued the mix of rural thriller and comic exercise, as well as “its lightness that hides a complex balance of genres and tones.”

Of the script, he has highlighted its “intricate structure, perfectly paced transitions, turns and ingenuity that, however, leaves a lot of room for fluidity, grace and reflection”, in which he has created a world that plays between “the specific and strange” and the real world and impulses.

Besides, The Pilar Miró award for best new direction has gone to the Spanish Elena Manrique for ‘Fin de fiesta’which he took the opportunity to remember that “satire is in the DNA of our country and it seems that people don’t realize it”, while the José Salcedo award for best photography went to Weizhe Gao for his work on ‘Black dog’.

Nonfiction and short films

Among the award-winning non-fiction works, the different juries have awarded the Punto de Encuentro prize, which has been awarded ‘Holy Cow’ by Louise Courvoisierwhile the Special Fundos prize has gone to ‘Familiar Touch’ by Sarah Friedland.

In the History Time section, the grand prize has gone to the Chinese Wang Bing for ‘Youth (Hard Times)’while the special prize has traveled to the United States with the film by filmmaker Alexander Horwath ‘Henry Fonda for President’ and they have awarded a special mention ‘Savanna and the Mountains’, by Paulo Carneiro.

The DOC Spain award has gone to ‘resistance box‘ by Concha Barquero Artés and Alejandro Alvarado Jódar, for their use of Fernando Ruiz Vergara’s archives and their reflection on censorship, while the Seminci Joven award went to ‘Daughter of the volcanoby Jennifer de la Rosa.

Respect for short films, The Golden Spike of the Official International Short Films Section has gone to ‘Baldilocks’ by Marthe Petersjust as two Silver Spikes have been awarded – this year the bases have been modified – to Punter by Jason Adam Maselle and ‘Lluna de sal’ by Mariona Martínez, while the best European short film has gone to ‘O’ by Rúnar Rúnarsson and the ‘The Night of the Spanish Short’ award went to ‘El Príncep’ by Àlex Sardà.

Other Spikes and awards

The Calderón Theater has also hosted the delivery of the Green Spikededicated to dealing with problems related to the environment, which the Chinese Jia Zhang-ke received for documenting “with sensitivity and precision the development at the expense of its territory, its memory and nature.”

The Rainbow Spikefocused on telling and reflecting on the LGTBIQ+ group and their stories, was for ‘Three kilometers to the end of the world’ by Manuel Parvû (Romania), which deals with the lack of understanding of new affections in rural environments and, in the words of the jury , shows “that past eras are still very much alive.”

‘Christmas Eve in Miller’s Point’ has received the award from the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI) by the American Taylro Taormina, while the festival’s audience award went to ‘Bob Trevino Likes It’ by Tracie Laymon, in the Official Section, and in the Meeting Point section (non-fiction), to the French ‘Holly Cow’ by filmmaker Vingt Dieux.
