Minister of ICT asks Claro, Tigo and Movistar to reinforce protocols and guarantee connectivity during election day

The Minister of Information and Communications Technologies (ICT), Carina Murcia, made an urgent call to the country’s main mobile telephone operators – Claro, Tigo, Movistar and Movilpt – to reinforce their contingency protocols and guarantee the stability of the networks during the election day that takes place this Sunday, May 31, 2026 in Colombia.

The statement was made through his account on the social network

The head of the ICT portfolio was emphatic in requesting the immediate activation of contingency plans by operators.

“From the National Government I call on Claro, Tigo, Movistar and Movilpt to maintain maximum alert, activate all their contingency protocols and immediately address the reported effects on their networks and infrastructure. Connectivity must be on high alert when democracy is underway“said the minister.

The message highlights the importance of communications stability during election day, in which millions of citizens go to the polls to elect the next president and vice president of the Republic.

The official also highlighted the work of the Center for Monitoring and Inspection of Communications Services (CMIC), from where the ICT Ministry permanently monitors the behavior of networks throughout the national territory.

“From the CMIC of the ICT Ministry we review the state of telecommunications in the country during election day. Guaranteeing the continuity of communications is essential for the development of a safe and transparent democratic day,” he indicated.

Furthermore, he reiterated that The Government maintains constant surveillance over the technological infrastructure:

“Our responsibility is clear, to monitor, monitor and demand that communications work for all Colombians,” he added.

The minister’s statement is known after the last official report from the MinTIC with a cut-off at 8:30 pm, which details that the country’s telecommunications system remains, in general, in normal conditions during the development of the electoral process.

According to the reporttechnical monitoring has shown progress in the stabilization of some previously reported events, although specific monitoring persists in infrastructure, energy and networks.

Among the departments with news reported by operators are:

  • Antioch
  • Bolivar
  • Caqueta
  • Cease
  • crashed
  • Cundinamarca
  • Nariño
  • North of Santander
  • Tolima
  • Amazon

The report also details that the main incidents correspond to:

  • Minor interruptions in some mobile services
  • Failures associated with energy infrastructure
  • Monitoring of base stations and communication links

The ICT Ministry assured that these situations do not represent serious effects and that they continue to be addressed in coordination with the operators.

This Sunday, May 31, 2026, Colombia celebrates the first round of the presidential elections, in which qualified citizens must go to the voting stations to exercise their right to vote.

The National Registry of Civil Status provided an electoral card with 15 boxes, of which 14 correspond to the presidential and vice-presidential formulas, and an additional one is intended for blank votes.

Although the card physically includes 14 options, only 11 formulas are active due to withdrawals of candidatures that occurred during the electoral process, although their boxes remain printed for logistical reasons.

Among the pairs in competition are figures such as Iván Cepeda, Claudia López, Abelardo de la Espriella, Sergio Fajardo and Roy Barreras, among others.

The Registry Office reminded citizens of the importance of marking the electoral card correctly to avoid the annulment of the vote.

Among the main recommendations are:

  • Locate the preferred presidential formula
  • Check a single option in the corresponding box
  • Use an “X” or other clear symbol within the voting space
  • Avoid multiple marks or crossouts
  • Do not make notes outside the established area

The entity insisted that failure to comply with these rules could invalidate the vote, affecting citizen participation in the election of the next head of state.
