Starting with Apertura 2023, the classification for the league will be different. The controversial “repechage” disappeared for a more American style called “Play In”.
Now, the teams that will have the opportunity to seek the championship will be those that are in the first 10 places in the general standings.
The first six places will qualify directly to the quarterfinals of the league, while the remaining four will fight in the “Play In” – a kind of repechage – for two places in the big party.
The first match of the “Play In” will be between seventh and eighth place in the general table. The winner will go directly to the league.
The second match of the “Play In” will be between ninth and tenth place in the classification. The winner will face the loser of the first match of the series and whoever wins will be the last guest to the final phase.
Thus, the quarterfinals of the tournament will be played as follows: The first and second places in the competition will face the two qualifiers by “Play In”, the third will play against the sixth and the fourth against the fifth.
Unlike Play In, the league matches are played in round-trip matches, classifying the one with the best result on the overall scoreboard, that is, with the sum of the goals in both matches.
In the event that there is a tie on aggregate, the person in the best position in the general standings will advance to the next round.
The only match that is not defined in this way by being in an overall tie is the final. If so, extra time and penalties are played, if necessary, to define the champion.
