The singer Valeria Lynch revived one of his most unique stories with Diego Maradonaframed in the Sanremo Festival 1990. In a television interview with Mario Pergolini, the singer recalled with humor and amazement the commotion caused by the footballer’s presence at the event, as well as Maradona’s unexpected reaction to a situation with the Brazilian musician. Toquinho.

“I have some divine stories about Maradona with Diego…”Lynch introduced, revealing the closeness and the number of anecdotes shared with the soccer star. The artist revealed that Diego Maradona proclaimed himself “godfather of my second son. However, he clarified that he never performed that role formally: “He never appeared. No, it was… Did you see Diego? He never appeared. The guy was Diego. You had to take him or not, because he was like that. I’ve known him for a thousand years because he was a fan of mine. So, he came to all the shows he could.”

When choosing an anecdote, the episode moves to 1990, when Valeria Lynch was invited to sing, at none other than the prestigious San Remo Festival, in Italy. At that time Diego Maradona was living his best time as a player of the Naples and was preparing for the World Cup that would be held in that country.

The magnitude of the event was clear when listing the artists present: “There were Ray Charles, Tina Turner, Liza Minnelli, Rod Stewart, all of them, great figures in music.”

In this international context, Maradona’s arrival to San Remo that did not go unnoticed, was an event. “Diego told me ‘I’m going to see you at the Palafiori Hotel, in San Remo. The commotion that was created… Diego was going with the girls, with Dalma, with Gianinna, who was a baby, and also with Claudia. He’s going to see me, he’s an hour late, the festival didn’t start, you see? Those crazy things that Diego did.”Lynch said, underlining the unpredictable character of the footballer, so characteristic.

The anecdote took a particular turn with the appearance of a Brazilian musician whom Lynch greatly admired. “I had been with Toquinho, because he was also at the festival. Suddenly I see him appear and I say: ‘Toquinho, I am an Argentine singer, I would like to have a photo with you.’ And he ignored me very badly: ‘Yes, yes, later, later’”, confessed the artist, who felt more than disappointed by the musician’s distant and cold attitude.

The situation intensified when Diego Armando Maradona broke into Lynch’s dressing room: “I was getting ready, Diego enters the dressing room and greets me. And Toquinho appears from above.” Upon seeing Maradona, the Brazilian did not hide his enthusiasm and shouted at the star: “Diego, Diego, I love you!” The footballer, true to his style, responded: “Now I’m going, now I’m going.”

Valeria Lynch took advantage of the moment to tell Maradona what happened with the Brazilian singer: “You know how badly he treated me.” The footballer, far from letting the situation go, made an unexpected decision. “At that moment, Diego tells his assistant: ‘We won’t see Toquinho all night’”Lynch said, surprised by Maradona’s reaction. Valeria continued telling: “I almost died, do you understand? I wanted to kill myself… and I told him: ‘No, Diego, go say hello’… Toquinho was chasing him and he left.”

The singer concluded her story with a smile, making it clear that Maradona’s unpredictable and charismatic behavior marked each encounter: the essence of his personality was evident in each unexpected gesture.
