During a recent appearance on the podcast Melo Montoyathe Monterrey fighter Latin Lover shared unknown details about one of the most tragic episodes in the history of Mexican entertainment: the accident that caused the death of his partner Edgar Ponce and left several members of “Solo para muejres” injured. Latin Lover’s statements allow us to reconstruct how those moments were lived and the impact it had on the cast members.
The former wrestler described the context in which the members of “Sólo para Mujeres” found themselves, a show that set a trend in adult entertainment in the late 1990s. According to his testimony, the group was returning from a tour when they received the instruction to go to Televisa San Ángel to record the presentation of a program hosted by Omar Chaparro. “When we return, we turn on our cell phones at the airport in Mexico and it says: ‘Who knows how to drive motorcycles?’ Everyone answering in the group: ‘Me, me, me, me, me’. He said: ‘Well, come to Televisa San Ángel, because we are going to present a program,’” the actor also recalled.
The recording involved a motorcycle entry, with the dancers dressed in shiny trench coats and dark glasses, traveling in a caravan along Periférico in Mexico City. Latin Lover himself recounted how the atmosphere among the participants was full of emotion and camaraderie. “We are all going in a caravan, no s***,” he said, referring to the mood before the accident.
The tragedy occurred when a car hit the group. “We grabbed Periférico and a son of his ch*ng*d* mother ran us over in a car”narrated Latin Lover. Édgar Ponce died on the spot and five other members suffered fracturesincluding the tibia and fibula. “A teammate died and five more members suffered a fractured tibia and fibula,” added the fighter, who underlined the global impact that the news had.
In addition to reliving the accident, Latin Lover reflected on the internal dynamics of the group, the demands of the show and the opportunities that arose after the incident. “Unfortunately or fortunately for me, the opportunity opened for Latin Lover to premiere at the Metropolitano”he stated, describing how his career advanced after the difficult episode.
The tragedy where Édgar Ponce died occurred in May 2005, causing shock to the artistic environment and generating debate about safety in entertainment productions. His death marked a before and after for the cast and the format of the show.
