José Jerí explains delay in his state of emergency assessment: “Overnight, things do not change”

The interim president, José Jerí, reiterated this Monday that “in a few days” he will present his report on the declaration of the state of emergency in the capital Lima and the neighboring port province of Callao, decreed two weeks ago to confront organized crime.

In an official event in Comas, the president referred to the delay in the results, announced days ago without the report being delivered, although he clarified that they will be disclosed “always with prudence and moderation.”

“I also have to tell you that, unlike previous measures, there are many more positive changes and there are still things to solve, as in any process. Overnight, things do not change, but there is something different, that this time there is a government that is in charge,” he stated.

Jerí highlighted the high citizen expectations and assured that his administration will not disappoint. “We are working day, morning, afternoon and dawn to generate the results (…) There is a government in charge, a government that is on the field and that is transforming the perception around a national government, which was a fundamental step. Everything comes through actions and gestures,” he added.

During the same activity, he announced that he will undertake a presidential tour throughout the country for three months. “Tomorrow we are going to be in an activity outside of Lima, we are going to be in Huánuco. And tomorrow in Huánuco and for three months, we are going to start a tour throughout the country,” he said.

“It is also important to listen to the concerns and expectations that each of the regions have or have. It is essential. We have a decentralist formation and, consequently, faithful to our origins, faithful to our formation. In three months we are going to tour the entire country starting tomorrow,” he added.

Jerí assumed the Presidency a month ago and, as one of his first measures, declared a state of emergency. Although it publicly announced that it would present results on October 28, until now it has not disclosed information that demonstrates the effectiveness of the actions implemented.

According to the analyst Juan CarbajalDuring this period, Lima (45) and Huaura (10) are the provinces with the highest number of reported homicides. Among these, between 80% and 90% “were caused by a firearm projectile.”

According to the Ministry of Health system, between October 22 and 29, 29 murders were recorded, although there are other violent deaths, also caused by firearm projectiles, which appear as “ignored” on the public platform of the National Death Information System (Sinadef).

According to a recent CPI survey, 50.6% of Peruvians approve of Jerí’s appointment and 55.9% support his management. Support for the president varies depending on the region: in Lima and Callao, 48.8% approve of his appointment and 58.6% of his management, while in the rest of the country these figures reach 51.6% and 54.2%, respectively.

On the other hand, 39.9% reject his appointment and 27.2% disapprove of his performance, while 9.7% and 16.9% did not provide an opinion on each issue. Furthermore, 66.9% of those consulted consider that Jerí should remain in office until next July, when he will hand over power to the next head of state, and 23.3% believe that he should be replaced before that date.
