The United States issued a tsunami alert for Hawaii after a powerful earthquake on the east coast of Russiatogether with a similar alert from Japan.
The 8.7 magnitude earthquake hit southeast Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky on the Kamchatka Peninsulaaccording to the United States Geological Service, on Wednesday morning, local time.
“A tsunami has been generated that could cause damage along the coasts of all the islands of the state of Hawaii,” said the tsunamis alert system of the United States National Meteorological Service in a bulletinasking for urgent actions to protect lives and properties.
Tsunami alerts were also issued for the Aleutian Islands, with alerts for the entire west coast of the United States and Canadaaccording to the Tsunamis alert system of the National Meteorological Service of the United States. Guam is under Tsunami alert.
The Japanese public broadcaster NHK changed its usual programming to show information about the alert and urged people to get away from the coast. The station showed vehicles away from the coastal areas of Matsushima, in the prefecture of Miyagi, north of Japan.
In some parts of Japan, waves of three meters high could be recorded, according to the National Meteorological Agency. This is compared to the heights of almost 40 meters of the TSUNAMI of 2011.
The United States weather service also warned threats of tsunami waves that would affect Philippines, Russia and some Pacific Islands, including YAP and the Marshall Islands.
For its part, the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management, UNGRD said there is no threat of tsunami for the Pacific coast in Colombia.
