Iran is not going to close the Strait of Hormuz, the Islamic republic’s ambassador to the UN, Amir Saeid Iravani, said on Thursday, but He added that it is an inherent right of the country to preserve the peace and security of the sea route.
The official made the remarks to reporters at the United Nations when asked about comments by Iran’s new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, who said on Thursday that the blocking lever must continue to be used in the Strait of Hormuz.
“We are not going to close the Strait of Hormuz“Iravani said. “But it is our inherent right to preserve peace and security in this sea lane.”
In a prepared statement that he read before answering questions, Iravani stated that “Iran fully respects and remains committed to the principle of freedom of navigation under the law of the sea.”
“However, the current situation in the region, including the Strait of Hormuz, is not the result of Iran’s legitimate exercise of its right to self-defense.”
“Rather, it is the direct consequence of the destabilizing actions of the United States in launching a aggression against Iran and undermining regional security“he highlighted.
He said he had no response to a comment from Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who told Sky News in an interview on Thursday that the US Navy, perhaps with an international coalition, would escort ships through the Strait of Hormuz when militarily possible.
