Interior defends before the Electoral Board the “full security” of the digital DNI

Madrid, March 27 (EFE).- The Ministry of the Interior has sent to the Central Electoral Board (JEC) a report from the National Police that certifies the “full security” of the MiDNI application for identity verification after yesterday this body suspended the use of this tool in electoral processes.

Interior sources have specified this Friday that the use of the QR code reading device is mandatory as of April 2 in accordance with the royal decree that regulates the DNI, which establishes that all public and private entities must adopt the necessary measures for the proper functioning of the digital version of the DNI within that period.

Interior has specified in its letter, sent yesterday afternoon, that it is up to the administration calling each electoral process to provide the polling stations with the necessary device to read the QR code.

Yesterday, the JEC reported that it had agreed to suspend this voter identification mechanism at the polls until it is guaranteed that the control of the verification of the identity of voters by these systems is sufficiently secure.

The PP had requested this suspension in the morning due to doubts that the authenticity of the document cannot be reliably verified with an updated QR code.

The body made this decision to “ensure the maximum confidence of citizens in the electoral system” and in view of the writings presented by the vice-counselor of the Presidency of the Junta de Andalucía – a community that will hold elections on May 17 -, the General Directorate of Internal Policy, the Popular Party and others.

For this reason, it suspended the agreements signed on February 16, 2023, September 18, 2025 and March 5, 2026, which allowed the use of the miDGT and miDNI applications by voters at the time of casting their vote, in person or by mail. EFE
