The case of Nicolás Petro Burgos, son of President Gustavo Petro, continues to generate controversy. As a result of the defense presented by his lawyer, Alejandro Carranza, which includes a statement from Samuel Santander Lopesierra, known as the “Marlboro Man”, Day Vásquez, ex-partner of the accused, came out publicly to refute what was said by the legal team.
Through a message on social networks, Day Vásquez made it clear that the former drug trafficker does know Nicolás Petro, contravening the version presented by the defense and opening the door to questions about the testimonies.

The controversy began when Nicolás Petro’s lawyer released a video in which Lopesierra, from his imprisonment in the United States, denied any type of relationship with the president’s son. This testimony was used as evidence to support the defense, which seeks to deny the accusations of a link between the former drug trafficker and the 2022 presidential campaign. However, Day Vásquez’s response was immediate and forceful.
“YES YOU KNOW HIM (sic)”, Vásquez indicated, when challenging the statements that seek to delegitimize the evidence presented by the Prosecutor’s Office.
President Petro’s former daughter-in-law is one of the key witnesses in the trial facing Nicolás Petro, who is being prosecuted for the crimes of money laundering and illicit enrichment. The investigations against him are based, in large part, on a series of digital evidence that includes audios and text messages in which the president’s son discussed the handling of money that cannot be justified, when he served as deputy of the Atlantic.
The authorities indicated that this evidence is crucial to demonstrate their links to illicit activities. Despite everything compiled against him, Nicolás Petro’s defense insists that there are no elements that prove his guilt.
In their strategy, in addition to Lopesierra’s video, they presented other testimonies that, according to them, do not implicate Nicolás in the crimes attributed to him. In his defense, Petro’s lawyer also highlighted that the statements presented by the Prosecutor’s Office lack a solid basis and are not sufficient to prove the charge of illicit enrichment.
The confrontation between Day Vásquez and the defense lawyer of President Gustavo Petro’s son, Alejandro Carranza, escalated on social networks since mid-October 2025.
Alejandro Carranza, who legally represents Nicolás Petro in the case he faces for alleged crimes charged by the Prosecutor’s Office, publicly attacked the Barranquilla woman at that time, accusing her of lying before the court and of failing to comply with her legal commitments.
Carranza expressed his discontent with Vásquez’s alleged attitude in a strong message published on his X account. In his publication, the lawyer not only attacked the ‘star witness’ of the case, but also involved other key actors in the process, including prosecutors and journalists.
Carranza accused Vásquez of hindering the progress of the legal process; He assured that the ‘star witness’ of the case had “played with justice” and, at the same time, “was singing out loud,” insinuating that her attitude was not serious or responsible in the judicial process.
Faced with Carranza’s strong statements, Day Vásquez did not take long to respond. Through her X account, Nicolás Petro’s ex-wife flatly denied the accusations and demanded that the lawyer stop spreading lies.
In her message, the Barranquilla woman expressed that she always fulfilled her legal commitments and that, far from hiding assets, these are already in the hands of the Prosecutor’s Office, as part of her collaboration with the judicial process.
“I have ALWAYS fulfilled my commitments… Don’t be a LIAR! The assets are in the possession of the prosecutor’s office. Stop lying, you don’t even know what to say, you don’t even know what to do (sic)”, Vasquez wrote.
