Beirut, June 5 (EFE).- The Shiite group Hezbollah disassociated itself this Friday from the mortar fall that killed a Serbian soldier and injured two Spaniards from the UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon (UNIFIL), and described as “unfounded” the accusations by the Israeli Army that point to it as the author of the launches.
“The enemy’s accusations that the Resistance attacked a UNIFIL position in the town of Debbine and caused the death of one of its soldiers are an unfounded allegation and a total falsehood,” the political and armed movement denounced in a statement.
“It is especially so considering that the accusation comes from the same enemy that has never hidden its discomfort with the presence of international forces in southern Lebanon and its constant efforts to limit their role, because they are living witnesses of their crimes,” he added.
On Wednesday night, several mortars fell on a UNIFIL position in the south of the country, causing injuries to a Serbian blue helmet who later lost his life in a Beirut hospital and minor injuries to two Spaniards.
The Army of the Jewish State attributed the action to the Lebanese movement, claiming in a statement that this was demonstrated by its “analysis of the trajectory of the projectiles.”
The area of operations of the international mission extends from the de facto border with Israel to the Litani River, a region where intense clashes are taking place between Hezbollah and Israeli troops within the framework of the conflict that began three months ago.
Since the beginning of hostilities on March 2, UNIFIL had already reported several incidents against its troops. EFE
