The confirmation of the separation between Gustavo Petro and Verónica Alcocer emerged in a context marked by international controversy, after the United States Department of the Treasury included the president, his ex-wife, his son Nicolás Petro and the Minister of the Interior Armando Benedetti in the so-called Clinton List.
This announcement, made by the Colombian president himself through his account on the social network and the political reactions that the news generated in the country.
In a series of messages published in that digital space, Petro addressed the decision of the US authorities and responded directly to the presidential candidate Juan Manuel Galán, leader of the New Liberalism, who had expressed his concern about the inclusion of the presidential environment on the list of the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC).

Petro’s reaction was not limited to rejecting the US measure, but included a highly impactful personal revelation that left open the possibility of calling into question several situations and meetings.
“Verónica Alcocer has been separated from me for years, they harm her gratuitously. The Colombian oligarchy had already given orders to prosecute her and my son to open several proceedings against her. It is their electoral strategy”the president wrote in X.
With this statement, the president confirmed for the first time that the relationship with Alcocer, who was his partner for more than twenty years and first lady since 2022, had ended years ago. Furthermore, he maintained that the inclusion of the former first lady on the Clinton List would be part of an internal political strategy to harm him and his family.
