Los Angeles (USA), June 15 (EFE).- Mexican Guillermo del Toro, three-time Oscar winner, was elected for the first time as a member of the Board of Governors of the Hollywood Academy, in the directors’ branch.
The institution announced this Monday the composition of the organization for the 2026-27 period, whose new members also include director David Leitch, known for the John Wick saga, who promoted the creation of the acrobatics category that will be recognized for the first time at the 2027 ceremony.
“The Board of Governors defines the strategic vision of the Academy, preserves the financial health of the organization and guarantees the fulfillment of its mission,” reads the institution’s statement.
Among the members re-elected for a new term are actor Lou Diamond Phillip (Actors’ Branch); Jinko Gotoh (Animation Branch), Daniel Orlandi (Costume Designers Branch); Hannah Minghella (Executive Branch), or Dana Stevens (Screenwriters Branch), among others.
For her part, producer Bonnie Arnold (Animation Branch); Bernard Telsey (Casting Directors Branch); director Roger Ross Williams (Documentary Branch); Bob Rogers (Short Film Branch); and Paul Debevec (Visual Effects Branch), return to the Board after a hiatus.
Among the new members, Michael Goi (Directors of Photography Branch), Anne Goursaud (Film Editors Branch), Patricia Dehaney (Makeup Artists and Hairstylists Branch), composer Kris Bowers (Music Branch), among others, also stand out.
The Academy has 19 branches, each represented by three governors, who can serve up to two three-year terms, consecutive or not, with a mandatory two-year break before opting for two additional terms, for a lifetime maximum of 12 years.
Del Toro won his first Oscar as a director in 2018 with ‘The Shape of Water’, a film that also won the statuette for best film.
In 2023, the Mexican added a third in the category of best animated film with his version of ‘Pinocchio’, shot in stop-motion animation. EFE
