Guide to traveling with pets on TransMilenio during the high season at the end of the year: avoid fines

Traveling with pets in the Integrated Public Transportation System (Sitp) of Bogotá is possible, as long as the rules and recommendations established by TransMilenio and the District Institute for Animal Protection and Welfare (Idpyba) are met.

During the high season at the end of the year, when mobility increases and the flow of passengers is greater, It is essential to strictly follow the provisions of the TransMilenio User Manual and the National Code of Police and Citizen Coexistencewith the purpose of guaranteeing safe, comfortable trips without setbacks or economic sanctions.

The System allows the entry of dogs, cats and other small pets, as well as guide animals, under the following conditions:

1. Dogs, cats and small animals

  • They must be transported in a crate or container appropriate to the size of the animal, so that it can stand, lie down, turn and sit comfortably.
  • You should never carry the animal in your arms, nor is it allowed to lift the crate or cage onto the chairs inside the buses or stations.
  • Only one pet per user is allowed to transport.
  • It is prohibited to feed the animal within the System or carry containers with solid or liquid food in the crate.

2. Medium and large breed dogs

  • The animal must enter with a collar and always remain restrained by its owner.
  • During the entire journey, the dog must be on the floor, never on a chair, even if traveling in a crate.
  • You must carry your current vaccination card and present it if requested by the authorities.

3. Dogs of special handling breeds

  • They can only be transported by adults.
  • The use of a collar and muzzle is mandatory at all times, from entry to descent from the system.
  • Under no circumstances may you occupy chairs or travel loose without safety measures.

4. Guide animals

  • They can enter without a muzzle and must only be properly identified in accordance with Article 87 of Law 769 of 2002.
  • They are exempt from the restrictions of crates and muzzles, but must always be under the control of their user.
  • It is not allowed to transport more than one pet per person, no exceptions, regardless of the method (crawler or leash).
  • Responsible ownership implies always maintaining control of the animal and avoiding inconvenience to other users of the system.
  • Respect the signage inside portals, stations and buses; Do not forget to collect any waste and ensure the hygiene of the occupied space.
  • For safety, do not carry containers with pet food or drink and avoid feeding them during the journey.
  • Keep your animal’s documentation up to date (vaccination card) and on hand in case any authority requests it.

Failure to comply with the safety and coexistence conditions for transporting pets in TransMilenio may result in financial sanctions:

  • Transporting animals in dangerous conditions or without adequate measures can be in fines of up to eight current legal daily minimum wages (smdlv).
  • Inciting an animal to attack carries a fine of 32 smdlv.
