Madrid, June 8 (EFE).- Since early this Monday morning, Congress has been experiencing great expectation before the visit of Pope Leo XIV, one of the most relevant events on the agenda of his official trip to Spain that began on Saturday in Madrid and will also take him to Barcelona and the Canary Islands.
Three hours after the arrival of the Supreme Pontiff at the Palacio de la Carrera de San Jerónimo, the final details are already being finalized for what will be the first intervention by a pope before the Spanish Cortes in a solemn session of both chambers.
Leo XIV attends this joint plenary session of the Congress and the Senate in his capacity as head of State of the Vatican, so he will be received with the same protocol as the rest of the leaders of other countries.
The leaders of almost all political parties, deputies, senators, regional presidents and former presidents of the Government and of Congress and the Senate will attend the event, as well as representatives of the highest authorities of the State, including the presidents of the Council of State and the Court of Accounts, the ombudsman and the attorney general of the State.
There is a large police presence around the Lower House, with the surrounding streets already closed to vehicle traffic, and there are long lines of journalists at the doors of the building to get accredited.
The massive presence of informants has forced the creation of press areas in addition to the usual ones because these were not enough to meet the demand of the media.
Many of them carry out live programs from the first hour and will broadcast live Leo XIV’s speech in the chamber, which will begin after the initial intervention of the president of Congress, Francina Armengol. EFE
