Alphabet’s Google to introduce artificial intelligence to US broadcasts of Paris Olympics, which will allow sports commentators to use AI to explain competitionsthe technology company announced Thursday together with NBCUniversal and the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee.
Google will be named the official AI search engine partner of Team USA, marking the first partnership between a technology company and an organization sporty non-profit organization, the three organizations said in a statement.
The announcement comes at a time when NBCUniversal, which broadcasts the Games in the United States, is modernizing its coverage to attract audiences who do not watch live television and young viewers who have become accustomed to watching videos online.
The Comcast-owned media company previously said it would launch personalized daily competition highlights generated by artificial intelligence and narrated by AI versions of characters such as sportscaster Al Michaels.
During daytime and primetime Olympic coverage, NBCUniversal anchors will use Google’s AI summaries to answer questions about select sports, such as the importance of lane assignment in swimming competitions.
Google AI summaries provide written answers to search queries without requiring you to click on a website link.
The Paris Olympics start on July 26th.
