In a spectacular close to the regular season of the World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour (CT), Canada’s Erin Brooks and Griffin Colapinto (both Americans) were crowned champions ofl Corona Fiji Procontested in the perfect waves of Cloudbreak. Marking the return of the CT to Fiji for the first time since 2017, this event did not disappoint, offering three days of top-level surfing.
Erin Brooks, at just 17 years old, made history by becoming the first Canadian to win a CT event. A wildcard making her first appearance in this elite of surfing, Brooks showed her talent from the start, standing out with her impressive frontside technique and barrel riding ability. In the final, she outlasted Brazilian veteran Tatiana Weston-Webb with a series of quick and precise maneuvers, earning a score of 7.34, enough to secure her victory.
For its part, Griffin Colapinto, originally from San Clemente, California, has cemented his status as one of the best surfers out there. In a close final against Indonesian Rio Waida, Colapinto dominated with powerful backside turns that earned him a score of 12.80 on his two best waves. This victory not only earned him his second title of the season, but also put him in a favourable position for the Lexus WSL Finals, where he will compete in his home country.
With this result, they were defined the 5 men and 5 women who will fight for the world title in Lower Trestles, California. In the women’s category they will be Caity Simmers and Caroline Marks, both from the United States, the Costa Rican Hennessy Breeze, the australian Molly Picklum and the Brazilian Tatiana Weston-Webb. While in the male, Colapinto and the Hawaiian John John Florence They lead the standings. They will be joined by the Australians Jack Robinson and Ethan Ewing and the Brazilian Italo Ferreira.
The Lexus WSL Finals, which will take place between September 6 and 14, promise to be an unforgettable spectacle, where the best surfers in the world will battle it out in a single day of competition to crown the 2024 champions.
