Ecuadorian Ministry of Energy extended energy rationing hours to 14 hours a day

The Minister of Energy of Ecuador, Inés Manzano, announced an extension in energy rationing hours. From having eight hours a day, the country will now have 14 hours a day without electricity supply.

“The management of this energy crisis: one, the conjunctural one, with extreme measures due to the unpredictable climate. At the same time, we are working on the recovery of our generating park. We face a dynamic and unprecedented crisis. “It forces us to adapt to changing scenarios.”

The measure will be evaluated again on Sunday, October 27 to determine whether it will continue at said schedule or be reduced. The portfolio manager expressed that it is a measure that takes into account the current climate in South America. “The entire region is facing an unprecedented drought,” Manzano added.

In Ecuador there are at least nine large energy distributors and all of them will have to face the measure taken by the Energy Cabinet. Inés Manzano explained that the country, with 17 million inhabitants, It needs 4,600 Megawatts for coverage although it faces a deficit close to 1,600 MW.

The distributors highlighted that for every hour without the electricity supply, they are losing US$10 million.
