Donald Trump completes today 100 days in the White House. SUS policies have marked the United States path with a tariff warantimigration plans, border closure, federal bureaucratic cuts and tax changes. Since January 20, the president has signed 139 executive orders and his popularity has fallen among voters in three months.
Trump has had a drop in approval by Americans. The New York Times and Siena College figures showed that 54% of respondents disapprove of their administration, while only 42% approves it. An analysis of Amcham Colombia said that it is a “deterioration of its public image in just the first 100 days of management.”
His level of approval has fallen to 18 points compared to the start of his mandate. The figures showed that 66% of respondents describe the first months as “chaotic”; 59% believe they are “scary”; and 42% of people described him as “exciting.”
“His style of government, characterized by the rapid execution of decisions, reveals a pragmatic reading of the environment: before an increasingly challenging scenarioTrump understands that the statement of power is the axis on which he articulates his transformation project, ”says Amcham Colombia.
Trump’s strategy through executive orders is to back up many policies by former president Joe Biden.
Border and migration closure
The border closure and launch “the largest deportation program that the United States has seen” has been one of its most aggressive movements. Seven executive orders have been signed on surveillance reinforcement, reactivation of migrant protection protocols and an increase in border infrastructure. Mexico has received up to 39,000 immigrants.
With more than 15 demands against him, Trump faces diplomatic tensions with Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras. The president has also signed up to four orders to expand the scope of the Immigration and Customs Control Service in the United States.
Mediator between Russia and Ukraine
Trump since his arrival, according to Amcham’s analysis, has pressed the two countries to reach a peace agreement. Reduced US military support to force dialogue between kyiv and Moscow. Although there are no specific orders on this issue, there have been diplomatic messages and meetings with Presidents Volodimir Zelenski and Vladimir Putin.
Inflation reduction
The president has signed up to five orders to reduce regulatory loads, boost energy projects and impose tariffs on imported products. Inflation control and reduce the cost of living through economic and productive protectionism has been one of the flags since its arrival at the presidency. The US CPI rate in March dropped to 2.4%, after being in February 2.8%. However, the tariff war unleashed by Trump could reverse the fall.
The tariff war
Tariffs imposed by the White House have increased the probability of a recession in the United States, according to Reuters. JP Morgan estimates that the probabilities of a recession in North America and the world are up to 60% and the WTO reduced the growth of world trade to 2.3% Because of Trump’s tariff moves.
Amcham said the president has unleashed a block of new rates, especially against Mexico and Canada. So far it has signed three orders to apply a rate of 25%, although the generality of the effects were not felt because most of the products within the tariff plan were exempted under the rules of the T-MEC Agreement.
Commercial tension is based on the exchange of tariffs between the US and China: The first imposed a 145% rate to the Asian country, while the Xi Jinping nation counterattacked 125% for some products.
